More than just a timber extension - Planning Permission Granted in Elmbridge

A Total Transformation:

  • Planning permission has been granted for the transformation of a 1930s detached house in Cobham.

  • Our client’s vision was for a modern family home, that was striking, ambitious and a joyful place to live.

  • The proposal includes a two-storey side extension, a single-storey rear extension, formation of a porch, and a garden studio.

Our Approach:

For the expansive brief it was imperative our designs were carefully considered to ensure they complimented the existing building. We applied two different design strategies:

  1. HARMONY

Our design for the two-storey side extension works in harmony with the existing building form, effectively enabling the property to be reconfigured as a double-fronted house. We loved the appearance of the original 1930s steel framed windows and therefore replicated their proportions in the new design. However, the existing pebble dash and concrete roof tiles were unsympathetic. So we propose to over-clad the external walls with insulation and re-render in a crisp white, and upgrade the roof with insulation and red plain clay roof tiles, to achieve the client’s ambition for a striking home.

  2. CONTRAST

In contrast, the single-storey rear extension is to appear as a new, contemporary addition, clad in pre-weathered timber. A strip of vertical brickwork and modern glazing visually separates it from the traditionally-detailed main house, and a huge opening to the rear elevation connects the house with the garden. A wildflower roof maintains a green outlook from the first floor bedrooms and will enhance the overall bio-diversity of the site.
